A new chapter - introducing Karimoku Research and the Karimoku Research Center
Karimoku Furniture, Japan’s leading wooden furniture manufacturer and an icon of Japanese craftsmanship with over 80 years of history, is proud to announce an exciting new chapter: the launch of KARIMOKU RESEARCH and the opening of the KARIMOKU RESEARCH CENTER in Tokyo.
The new initiative connects Karimoku Furniture’s extensive expertise as an industry leader – including countless skills, technologies and innovations in woodworking – with a wide range of creative thinkers, artists, architects and designers in Japan and worldwide.
The KARIMOKU RESEARCH CENTER is a dynamic, purpose-built environment that encourages collaboration and exploration. The center is located in a meticulously renovated three-storey building in Tokyo where each floor plays a different role: a gallery space for exhibitions called ‘The Archive’, a ‘Materials Lab’ for seminars and hands-on experiences, and a multi-purpose space called ‘The Study’ for in-depth discussions.
The first exhibition of KARIMOKU RESEARCH “Survey 00: WOOD ‘The Age of Wood'” features the Danish design studio Christian+Jade. Building on their “Weight of Wood” exhibition, a highlight of 3daysofdesign 2023, they extended their research to Japanese forests, exploring the concept of aging, time, and weathering. The exhibition is on display at the KARIMOKU RESEARCH CENTER until December 26.
