The Japanese architectural office UtA/Unemori teco Associates, a joint venture between UNEMORI ARCHITECTS and teco, has converted the first two floors of an eight-story commercial building in the city center of Kitakami in the prefecture of Iwate in Japan into an inventive health and childcare support complex with a total floor area of 4,000 sqm. By entirely gutting and converting the first two floors and facade of the existing building and integrating the health and childcare support facilities as well as a public meeting space, UtA/Unemori teco Associates realized a creative and inviting space that acts as a new meeting point for the city’s residents. The new complex is structured around a central, open space, featuring gently undulating floors and ceiling, as well as a facade with large windows and entrance area. With the conversion, UtA/Unemori teco Associates showcases their architectural competence for sensitive redevelopments of existing buildings and the re-use of rare space in the city.
In Takaoka, Japan, the Japanese architectural office UNEMORI ARCHITECTS has completed an inventive and cleverly structured one-story house, called House in Takaoka, designed to resist severe climate conditions. Located in the Toyama Prefecture, where harsh winters bring deep snowfall, short daylight hours and high humidity, the house is built on stilts to prevent flooding, allow for air circulation, and prepare for snow accumulation. Divided into three building bodies, the one-story house features large, skillfully positioned windows that allow for maximum daylight whilst facing away from the neighbouring houses. With House in Takaoka, UNEMORI ARCHITECTS showcases an architectural solution for flood-threatened areas with difficult climate conditions whilst realizing an appealing, bright and comfortable home for a family of four.
Japanese architecture office UNEMORI ARCHITECTS has completed the Sukagawa Community Center in Fukushima as part of a municipal reconstruction project to revitalize the severely damaged city center after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Following a series of citizen workshops, UNEMORI ARCHITECTS developed a multi-purpose 13,698 sqm building complex extending five floors, housing a library, a museum, a lecture hall, childcare support as well as a café amongst others. Built in collaboration with Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm, the community center’s architecture by UNEMORI ARCHITECTS is characterized by open floor setbacks, cantilevered slabs and an activity-based floor plan, transcending the building typology of a public community center and thereby successfully connecting the city and its people.
The Japanese architectural office UNEMORI ARCHITECTS has completed an innovative, geometrically structured small house, called House Tokyo. Located in a densely populated area in central Tokyo, the private residence comprises a tiny footprint of just 26m2 and a total floor area of 51m2, showcasing an architectural paradigm for urban densification. Various ceiling heights and many openings and windows allow for a spacious experience in this compact small house. With House Tokyo, UNEMORI ARCHITECTS showcases its excellent ability of handling complex spaces of every scale.
